About the layout

Brighton East is a Southern Region terminus around 1998 to 2003, when third-rail electric units ran most of the passenger trains.

The idea came from Dave's son Matt, a medical student in Brighton. What if the old Kemp Town branch had kept its passenger trains, which in fact stopped in 1933? What if it had never closed, rather than losing its goods trains in 1971, and had been electrified, with a second tunnel bored for a direct line to Lewes? It is not an exact model of Kemp Town, which would never fit, but it gives the flavour of that cramped little terminus.

Every building is scratch-built, based on real ones near the old Kemp Town station site. The biggest is modelled on the Barry Building at the nearby hospital.

The trains run on NCE DCC. Radio-controlled servos move the points, and Kadee couplings are released by electromagnets under the track.
